2020
In November 2020, the School of Data Science and Computer Science was renamed the School of Computer Science.
2016
Sun Yat-sen University changed the National Security College's administrative affiliation to the School of Data Science and Computer Science in April 2016.
2015
In October 2015, the management of the Guangzhou Supercomputing Center was officially transferred to Sun Yat-sen University and incorporated into the School of Data Science and Computer Science.
2015
In June 2015, Sun Yat-sen University established the School of Data Science and Computer Science by integrating the strengths of computer science departments, software schools, and supercomputing schools of the School of Information Science and Technology and computational mathematics of the School of Mathematics and Computational Science.
1997
Sun Yat-sen University restructured its School of Information Science and Technology (established in 1996) in July 1997. This involved moving the Computer Science Department and Software Institute (formerly under Lingnan College) into the School of Information Science and Technology, and merging the Scientific Computing and Computer Applications Department into the School of Mathematics and Computational Science.
1989
The year 1989 saw the creation of Lingnan (University) College at Sun Yat-sen University, a collaboration between the university's computer science and economics departments.
1979
Professor Li Yuesheng, heeding Academician Hua Luogeng's call for balanced theoretical and practical development in Chinese computing, established China's first computer science department at Sun Yat-sen University in 1979. This groundbreaking initiative, approved by the Ministry of Education, united computational mathematics and software engineering under one department, launching on June 27th.
