Institute of Big Data and Computational Intelligence
Established in 2015, the Institute of Big Data and Computational Intelligence focuses on addressing major national and industry development needs, emphasizing interdisciplinary research and industrial applications. It extracts scientific research problems related to big data and computational intelligence from significant industrial applications.
The institute adheres to a philosophy of internationalization and high-level development, centering its research directions and projects around "Big Data Technologies and Intelligent Applications." Research areas include algorithms and systems for big data analysis and processing, new types of big data storage, machine learning and natural language processing, perceptual computing and intelligent learning, large-scale databases and data mining, methods and applications of computational intelligence, and big data processing tailored to specific industries. Specifically, the institute will further concentrate on new forms of big data storage, intelligent optimization and learning, big data analysis and processing, and the integration of human-machine-physical intelligence. These areas are interconnected from bottom-layer storage, middle-layer algorithms, to upper-layer industrial applications, collectively supporting theoretical, methodological, and applied research in big data and computational intelligence.

Currently, the institute has 23 full-time faculty members, including 9 professors, 12 associate professors, and 2 lecturers. Among them are 1 Ministry of Education National-Level High-Caliber Talent, 1 recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 1 recipient of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund, 1 member of the National "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Project," 1 Zhujiang Scholar Distinguished Professor, and 3 selected talents from the Ministry of Education's New Century Excellent Talents Program. The institute also boasts a number of outstanding postdoctoral fellows and distinguished researchers.
The institute houses important research platforms such as the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Big Data Analysis and Processing and the Guangdong Engineering Technology Research Center for Big Data Management and Application. Members of the research team have published hundreds of papers in top-tier international journals (e.g., IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Evolutionary Computation, IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, ACM Transactions on Database Systems, ACM Transactions on Information Systems, Artificial Intelligence) and conferences (AAAI, IJCAI, NIPS, ACL, KDD, CVPR, ICML, ICCD). In recent years, they have led numerous key projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation (focusing on governance big data, medical big data, and urban traffic big data), key national R&D programs (such as facial recognition), major projects under the Science and Technology Innovation 2030 - "New Generation Artificial Intelligence" initiative (group intelligence direction), defense-related research projects (data mining and edge computing), and provincial and municipal major projects. They have received multiple National Science and Technology Progress Awards and ministerial-level science and technology awards, achieving fruitful academic results and establishing considerable international influence.
