学生科技活动
大学生课外科技创新活动是整合课内外实践教育教学的重要环节，对培养学生创新能力和应用能力，优化人才培养过程，提高教学质量，具有不可替代的作用。实验中心充分重视对相关项目的支持，在制度上引导和鼓励教师投入对学生的实践环节包括学生课外研究、学科竞赛、小学期实践课的指导，在实验环境设备和经费上给予足够的支持。

创新基金
中心在“中山大学实验室开放基金”、“中山大学学生科研计划项目”、“中山大学学生信息技术发展中心信息科技创新平台项目”、“中山大学教育发展基金”等多渠道的资助下，每学年、每门实验课中均大量开设“开放式、研究性”实验，每个实验室全面对学生开放，同时鼓励学生自带课题进行自主探索研究。除了学校、学院资助的科研项目外，中心通过重点实验室、校企共建实验室、实验室基金等，每年向学生公布一批项目指南，积极引导学生参与项目以研究。
中心也制度化地设立“东校区学生信息技术创新活动基金项目”，平均每年资助40余项学生科技创新活动，向实验兴趣浓厚和学有余力的学生提供更多的实验教学空间。这些学生科技创新基金项目都需要通过专门的评审小组评审、答辩与指导，并对重点项目委派导师组，从而保证了学生科技创新活动的质量。学生课外科研兴趣小组可以利用课余时间在实验中心进行探索性实验，或参加教师科研工作开展实验研究，以早期强化和培养科研意识和学习科研方法，使学生受到较全面的、严格的、系统的科研训练，更加突出对学生综合实验能力的培养。
